Skittles: A slang term for unofficial chess games, most often played quickly. I thought this was candy. LOL

Duffer: A slang term for a very poor player. Also called woodpusher, patzer. This one was my favorite.

Spite Check: A check given by a player facing the inevitable checkmate of his own King. A Spite Check does not eliminate the threat of checkmate; it merely delays it for a move or two. Don't even get me started.

Bad Bishop: A bishop that is blocked in by it's own pawns which rest on the bishop's own color.

Cheapo: A slang term meaning a cheap trick that results in a won game or won material. Also called Swindle

En Prise: A French term meaning "in a position to be taken". When a piece is placed in a position to be captured wherein the enemy piece cannot be re-captured. Also called "leaving a piece hanging".

J'adoube: French term meaning "I adjust".

Kibitz: A comment during the game or during analysis afterward, within the hearing of the players. Refers most often to spectators. One who kibitzes (called a "kibitzer") during the play of the game can be, at the request of the players or by ruling of the Tournament Director, removed from the playing hall.

Luft: A German term meaning "air". One creates "luft" by giving the king an escape square

Underpromotion: Promoting a pawn to any piece other than a Queen.

Zugzwang: German for "compelled to move". A situation that occurs when any move a player makes will weaken his/her position, however, he/she is compelled to move in accordance to the rules.

Zwischenzug: German for "intermediate move". A move that is made inbetween a seemingly forced sequence of moves, improving a player's position.

Good words, iffy definitions.

More interesting (to me) would be something like:

Bad Bishop - a man in the wrong profession.
Spite Check - a self evaluation of one's bad attitude.
Luft - using a German aircraft to open up the castled king's position.
Underpromotion - umm... let's not go there.

Duffer:- Irish football player

Bad Bishop:-Only on a Saturday night at the local S&M party

Cheapo:-Any guy from Tallaght with the surname Cheap

I heard the other day:

"A temporary restoration of material parity".

God I love the English Language. Why make sentences simple and boring when you can make them elaborate and beautiful.

Luft is also used in sweden. As in german it means air.

To Evil homer:

Duffer is of course a drinker from Springfield. Homer simpson drinks duff.

Hog: Slang term for 'rook'.

Fish: A bad chess player.

Donut: Something I say in live chess because I'm a mod and don't want to break the rules.  Also a favourite of Homer.

On a related topic (well not really), would someone care to tell me the pronounciation of J'adoube? (English, not American, if you would.)

Cruel, cruel fate: when I lose a chess game.

Transcendent brilliance: when I win a chess game.

. . . and I think the bad nights were caused from drinking too many cheapos and eating too many skittles.

Swindle - Any good move played against me

Combination - Giving up the queen in the hope that the opponent will start calculating, realise he's winning and faint in shock, allowing a win on time

Kibitz - Hooliganism, chess style

J'adoube - The ultimate escape from the game losing blunder.

Laughing
