I don't know about u guys but correspondence chess is truly a pain fr me. I simply can't play it. I have tried but I simply cant concentrate on games that you have to wait hours and hours on. It should be banned! When is Live Chess here!!! Vive Live Chess!

Most chess good chess games take quite a while to finish. I have found that the only thing people want to play live over the internet is 3 min. or 5 min. chess which is nothing more then a matter of who can move faster. Great if you want to play 100 games a day but you dont learn anything.

In hell you're blessed with not having Yahoo Wink

I think from what I saw, Fritz 11 is the best buy. It has many great features, both as a standalone program and engine, but also online. For example the new built in Tactics Server looks very good, and for PlayChess (the membership you get with Fritz 11) it's not uncommon to have 5000-6000 players online simultaneously.

If I were you I'd buy Fritz 11, use the one year PlayChess membership you get with it, and after that one year see if Chess.com's Online Chess has already gotten better than PlayChess'.

I'm sympathetic to that point of view.  I am often that poor solitary soul looking for a 20 minute game on chess servers full of requests for 5 minute games.  Frown  Chess is not meant to be an arcade game!  Chess is old-school:  each game is meant to be savored one move at a time.

Chess is a civilized game in an increasingly uncivilized world that's always in a rush for more, more, more!

So I shouldnt have something I enjoy because you've developed ADD from playing too much Playstation? Why don't you take your 30 second attention span and go play Resident Evil 16 and leave chess to the intellectuals.

http://www.freechess.org is a good site for real-time games. Yahoo is decent, but if you want better chess, go to the FICS (free internet chess server) site I just listed. Yahoo tends to be non-players who will give you all their pieces and the board, or people who most likely are using programs ( I used to play on there with Fritz when I was in highschool and would find people who would play bestmove for 95%.)  FICS is good for tutorials too, as they offer graphical lessons. Play there for quick chess, then come back here for Correspondence chess and all the other great services!

Quick side note too: If slow chess is boring, then you need to improve or choose a new opening. If you are not a GM and are bored with chess, that means that you are missing a lot of chess ideas. Most of my games contain more ideas and subtle conflicts than I have the skill to resolve, so it's always fun to try to uncover and solve all the nuances of the position. I would suggest maybe reading Euwe's books on the Middlegame. Perhaps with some more knowledge about the conflict of the pieces, you would find chess exciting enough to play.

How do you savor each move in a rapid 20 minute game?

Play OTB, which even at the patzer levels still gives you two hours for your moves, or turn-based, when three days per move often seems too fast.
