No, the computer was not controlled by a GM. Kasparov was the best player at the time. I doubt he would have lost a few times to a GM. The computer was on its own.

@PatriotScout: I think the scandal may be more that Deep Blue was having "positional help" with long term plans by a GM, rather than Kasparov simply playing against a lone GM.
The computer was designed to play like the greatest players in history. There is no scandal, stop looking for one. If you want more information on the Deep Blue project there is a film you can watch.
Did IMB cheat or was Kaparov just jealous (after Kapsparov lost to Deep Blue several times, was a GM really helping Deep Blue.)
