I know there is NOTHING that substitutes actually playing people (I prefer in person but I guess there is nothing wrong with online) but does playing a chess computer, lets say specifically Chess.com's engine, help? I need a lot of help with my game and I want to really keep on getting better.
Either are better than not playing at all. But the differences in game play are different enough that I'd say playing a computer would make you better at playing a computer, and playing people would make you better at that. Especially chess.com's computer which, to make things sporting, will make a bad move now and then so that it doesn't just crush everyone who plays it. (The lower the setting, the more bad moves).
So my question to you would be, when you say you want to get better, which do you want to be better at?
I'm sold on computers for training, analyzing and practicing... I don't use Chess.com's engine though, when I do train I rely on Deep Fritz.
If your aim is to become better at chess against people, then it's better to train against people...
What is nice about playing against computers is you can choose the exact position. Playing against a computer is not a substitute for playing against people, but can supplement it nicely.
