 I kind of doubt that is the reason that girls stop playing chess. this would then apply to all sorts of activity there male and female are in the same club.

I think one aspect is that chess isn't considered cool for a teenager.

chess is a rather hard game. either you loose or you win. you cannot show mercy in a game.  some may find it kind of hard.

I've other clubs drive away young players because they got blamed for losing.  they forget the fun aspect of chess and they never got any attention to how well they played.

we have to acknowledge that even we do not want to be sexist - men and female still want to be treated differently deep down.

In my club we laugh and we allow players to play silly chess whereas in another club they are told not to play silly and be very serious to an extent it gets boring.

the above my be some factors why some stop.

Yeah, it's not as if they develop alternative interests as they reach adolescence. The males drove them off...Having said that, I suppose if all the young males were kintoki's then they would be heading for the door.

I guess it might be different in the U.S, but over here there's not a chance that they'll be as many females as males in any scholastic tournament.
