I really dont care how popular the game is, I like playing it-but a lot of people on here  complain and worry about the popularity of the gameo and fret over it non-stop. I think it would be a good boost in popualarity  once again in the game but I am not missing any  sleep over it-----the anit -amaerican people will pop up lol

An American champ would be a waste to the sport. A Chinese champ would be much better.

how in the world would a chinnese  champ be better-no way

PossibleOatmeal

Well an American champ would help interest in America.  (350 million)

A Chinese champ would help interest in China.  (1.4 billion)

johnmusacha

Yes it would.  That is the only way chess will be taken seriously.  People thought CroMagnon from Norway could help, being a relatively photogenic Westerner but NOPE.

how many in china have an access to a board?       Think american champ would be better because of all the marketing  and pr it would genrate-having a champ from china whose name nobody could understand or say  would not help.

Guess what language is spoken by more people in the world than any other language.  I'll give you a hint: English is a distant third place.

so?      Mexico  does not even come close to the pr and marketing  power of the United states  if you had a champ who had some personable  and played off on the marketing .  The western world would go crazy over  a spanish speaking champ from educador. The resat of the world would yawn with a chap form china . China  is still a pretty poor country for a vast amount of people just trying to survive-hvaing a chess board on the table would be very unlikely.

richb8888

If you had an namerican champ and a rival from china then it would work.

johnmusacha

Unless the Chinaman was tall and really good looking like that Korean actor that had a bit part in Arnold Schwartzenegger's comeback romp The Land Stand (2013).

What does Mexico have to do with anything?

The answer was Mandarin Chinese with about 2 billion speakers.  English is 3rd with 335 million.  There are way more people that can "understand a Chinese name" than you think.

This is the guy's IMDb profile:

does not matter what they speak---------a good chunk of those 2 billion are so poor  they would not have the money to buy a chess game-tryingot hang on. Froma pr point a guy who speaks  mandarin  would hardly do wounders for the rest of the world.  There is a connection with the rise of popularity  of chess and American being involved back in the Fisher days. It has never been as popular since with the  void of a real top American  player--------Achamp form the rural heartland of china  is not goingot do that.

richb8888

American  champ love him or hate him would bring the worlds spot light  backon chess.

Sqod

The Chinese already found a good square from which to launch an attack. They call it the "Tiananmen Square." Smile

(OK, sick joke.)

richb8888

I would not  say that -----there is one American right near the top-----I think it could be a few years and again he might regress. There are more Chinese but the money power language is English. How many people in China do not even have access to the daily internet----------it would be pretty high.

Spanish?

tjepie

i think we need a norwegian champion. cus he is the best.

Your numbers must be off. English is one of the 2 official languages of India. That's over 1 billion, right there. English is also cumpulsory in several other countries.maybe you mean day to day vernacular, but Manderin doesn't meet that standard either.

Those statistics concern native speakers of a language. If one includes people for whom English is not their first language, the numbers are considerably different:
