in my opinion most of these forum threads are chess players entertaining themselves when they want a quick break from doing chess stuff. a lot of them have nothing to do with chess at all. they can be distracting if you get sucked into them. it's kind of a like a black hole.
Some of the group threads are pretty interesting.
Great analogy, there's a forum called Lets Sum Up, or something like that, and this post would fit in perfectly.
