Draw option - out of time games: opinions requested...

    Hi all,

I just wanted to make a suggestion regarding timeouts:

I don't know about everyone else, but sometimes I don't want to claim a win on time. Usually it's either because I've been having a really tight game with someone and want to see how it ends, or because the person I'm playing in a much higher ranking than me and, even if I'm in a better position that my opponent, I don't want my highest ranking win to be based on a timeout.

BUT, usually in these kinds of games you want to continue because there is some chance you won't win (that's one of the things that make playing exciting, right?), and you don't want to lose when you had the opportunity to win.

So, how about if there's an option that we can choose which says that if your opponent timeouts, the game immediately changes to one in which the only possible results (in terms of points at least) are a draw or a win for you? i.e. if your opponent beats you in the game, you both only gain or lose the points equivalent for a draw? But if you really do draw or if you win, then the normal points adjustment apply?

Just an idea. What do people and site admins think?

I think a more appropriate outcome would be to just always have the option of playing on, but the outcome of the timeout on everyone's ratings wouldn't change.

I dont like it, it's fine just the way it is. A win by timeout is a win. Your opponent probably wont hesitate to claim if roles were reversed. It's like insisting on the touch-move law OTB. If you don't ALWAYS enforce it it WILL be abused.

I do agree on one thing, though, I would like to be able to choose my own best win, (totally subjective, of course) regardless of the rating of my opponent.

My current best win says nothing about me, only that a high ranked player blundered a piece and was gracious enough to resign after 7 moves. Somehow, that reflects better on him than me......

There is an option that actually let's you choose if you want to automaticly claim a victory on time or not, this however doesn't apply in tournament games or team matches, for obvious reasons.
