I have a twin brother and all through school we used to have similar classes and times.  Many a time he's remembered or I've remembered a position, had no board, and indeed drew a chessboard and cut squares of paper labeled: p, R, Kt, B, K, Q to play chess

I played with salt and pepper shakers on a restaurant's checkered table cloth just recently. I really need an inexpensive travel set...obviously.

In Solzhenitsyn's book "The First Circle," two prisoners pass the time by playing chess, without a board, entirely from memory. As this book is based on his experiences in Stalin's labour camps, I imagine it was something he had often seen done. I know I couldn't play that way.

"In Solzhenitsyn's book "The First Circle,""

That was a great book

I used to work on a psych ward and they never had a full set of pieces  - inverted empty pill bottles always made for good rooks but the most dreadful piece was the queen who was made from a white-out bottle and for a face we cut out a picture of our supervisor - that was one ugly queen.

thanks for the idea
