How do I get to play a F.I.D.E tournament. It it online or in person? How can I enroll for a tournament if it is going to be in person.

I have checked fide.com, but could not find details on how one can actually enroll for a tournament.

Any information on this will be very much appreciated.

I believe its OTB only tournaments for there ratings. As for how my best guess would be to find a local chess club and ask them about how u can enter one...Cool

    Hi Spraveen,

there are only a few tournaments powered by the FIDE (Chess Olympics, World Championship etc.) directly. No chance to take part (-> qualification) for a normal chess player.

The best way to get in "contact" with the FIDE is to play (in person) tournaments which have an ELO-evaluation. ELO starts at about 1900 points an if you have enough points and credits (-> victories against Master players) you can become a FM (FIDE Master about 2200 pts), an IM (International Master about 2400 pts) and even a GM (Grandmaster about 2550 pts).

You must first play in events sanctioned by your national federation.  Many of the larger opens will attract enough international players that FIDE ratings will be possible to obtain - IF you play well enough to be paired with some of them.

There is a minimum number of games against players with FIDE ratings you have to log in a three year period to get a FIDE rating (after three years, if you haven't qualified, results will "expire"), but I can't remember what it is now.  Also, you won't be rated by FIDE if you lose all those games - you must also have at least one win or two draws in that minimum number to be rated.

All these FIDE-rated and nationally-rated events will be OTB tournaments, with minimum requirements for time controls and equipment, and will be supervised by qualified arbiters to enforce the rules.

This easiest way to get Fide rated is to play a closed tournament where 4/10 players are Fide rated and every player scores at least 1 point. That is how I got mine.
