from all the players in the world i admire karpov and i still beleive that kasparov is better than karpov.though there is no need to compare fischer against kasparov, it is nice that americans have fischer that they could brag about i dont know what they would be without him lol

Or Pillsbury.  Or Fine.  Or Reshevsky.

Fischer made 6-0 againsts 2 opponents at the highest level (candidate matches), kasparov did not, that's make the difference...

It's impossible to answer this question definitively, first because Karsparov played in a time when chess theory was more evolved than it was in Fischer's time, second because Kasparov benefited from advances in computer-driven analysis and training, and third because the Elo rating system has evidently undergone inflation. However, I'd venture that Fischer did more to popularize chess and to bring it into the public eye than any other player in history.  But Kasparov was a far more active player than Fischer was, so his legacy of world-class games is far more extensive.

I declare it a draw by the threefold rule.

Magnus Carlson is rising through the ranks... I have this feeling he will challenge Kasparov one day and either beat or draw him...

Actually, one of my life's more dubious goals is to beat Magnus. But I figure it's better than the goals of SOME people I could name(which include getting within 10 meters of a 2PM band member and having Justin Bieber know their name. Yes, really.)

lol...the most sensible suggestion so far.

And helltank, I sincerely hope this is the last time you make mention of The Beeb around here.  He (?) looks like a bobblehead and sounds like my 6-year-old niece.

Hey G8---you're mighty sassy for a guy who only has haile Selassie ---to brag about! Wink

we dont see people compairing morphy or capablanca with kasparov but they both have done better to chess than fischer.  people give the reason that fischer doesnt get help from a computer to be great but it is known that to become like him it require years of reading and learning. this days almost all of us have huge database of games ,books and every thing we need but we dont see no one becoming like kasparov. every world champion had all the help he needed to be great.

we all know that it is impossible to compare players who hadnt play with eachother but one could confidently say "kasparov is the greatest player ever lived" without thinking about fisher but no one could say "fisher is the greatest player ever lived" without thinking about kasparov.

Uh-oh, watch out for the turn in that sentence, it's a doozy!

Here is a big difference between Kasparov and Fischer. When Kasparov lost his title to Kramnik in 2000---he didn't win a single game in the match and Kramnik didnt exactly walk on water. Thats a hell of a way to lose your championship. Yessir---thats a hell of a way to loose your title!

Now when Fischer Abdicated his throne there was some debate over what the outcome would have been if he had played. Yessir, we're still debating whether Fischer would have won.

Now we know Kasparov was a definite looooooser and will remain so throughout eternity. We'll be debating the Fischer-Karpov outcome for a thousand years. Personally, I like the Fischer outcome better!

By the way---When was the last time you heard someone debating the Kasparov-Kramnik match ?

Fischer was crazy like a fox.

Lasker and Kasparov played for decades as Champions and defended the title numerous times. Both had a bad final match, but even after that they kept playing top tournaments for years and scored top results decades after winning the World Championship. Maybe they were more interested in playing great chess and winning than afraid of being seen as loooooosers throughout eternity :-)

I'm not sure this makes any sense. What if we put it this way: Kasparov had to hold his title against opponents who could analyze their games with computer aid. Fischer had it easier facing opposition "without a cane".

LOL...sorry, but...that's just nuts!  Kasparov's games are the greatest ever...his play was absolutely amazing from the get-go.

And I think it's pretty well-known that Fischer worked out a lot, playing tennis and swimming and so forth.

When Kasparov failed to win a game in his  championship match with Kramnik, do you know how far they had to go back before they found another champion who didnt win a game in his championship match ?   They had to go all the way back to 1921 when Lasker failed to win a game against Capablanca.

Faablehaft, you can choose Kasparovs and Laskers exits if you like but they are seldom if ever discussed. They will be talking about Fischer's exit for a thousand years. It never happened before and will probably never happen again.

Fischer was crazy like a fox!
