I don't know how crazy this sounds, but...

I'm looking at an ad that features a chess set, and I find myself beginning to analyze the position as if I were making the next move (either side)... and then begin to realize that the situation on the board is either very unlikely, or just out-right illegal!  And I can't tell you how many photos of chess sets have the pieces set in the opening position with the bishops and knights reversed! 

This doesn't just happen in ordinary magazines that don't specialize in chess, but in Chess Life, also!

Is it just me, or does anyone else find themselves doing this when coming across pictures of chess sets?

All the time for me.  And I also am amazed at all the professional ads that have mistakes in them.  It's annoying, but also rewarding in the sense that I feel like I'm apart of an elite club.  I mean, the people who makes these ads obviously believe there is some sort of status attached to chess (why else use a chess set?) but they do not understand the game themselves.  It's almost like a form of worship from afar. 

I always have a  look but never say anything aloud. You know those guys that used to be in the army, and then your watching a James Bond film and they bang on about how a ground to air missle wouldn't do that, and a glock has too much flange to be used in such and such way. Well, essentially I don't want to end up the chess equivalent of that, y'know.

I was just curious how many people found themselves analyzing a chess position even if we were just looking at ads.

Yeah and when a chess set is setup in a store (most recently a grocery store in front of some book display about vampires or something) I absolutely cannot resist making a move or correcting the board.
