Why not just 1.any check on the a-file followed by 2.mate on the b-file?

Are you sure that's a real game position? How did Black's dark-squared Bishop leave f8? I realize it may have been captured by a Knight or a Rook/Queen along the rank, but it looks kinda screwy to me.
