Every time Grandmasters play nowadays. Do they always follow the opening book moves? Have you seen a GM player who hasn't?

Who do you think is writing the book? When a GM makes a move that is not in the book, it's in the next edition of the book!

Ever wonder where they keep this theoretical book?

That's true, the GMs are the ones who wrote the opening book, so as they improvise, it becomes textbook material.

GMs dont improvise, they cook up novelties at home after countless hours of analysis.

Yo punk! I said GM's nowadays! Some, in fact most of the opening moves are very old that even your punk grandpa's age isnt old enough.

    Calm down.

The answer to your question is "yes"

GMs go out of opening books because A) they forget the line or B) they have a homecooked novelty ready
