Does anyone know how many grandmasters are alive today?

How about how many have there been total?

How long has the grandmaster title existed?

What are grandmaster norms? and how are GM's different from IM's and FM's?

Wikipedia gives a lot of information with links, stats and even names of GM's.  Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandmaster_%28chess%29.  If link is not working, go to wikipedia.org and search for Chess Grandmasters.
