In the United States, chess has not been an African-American tradition, but that seems to be changing rapidly. In New York right now, there are three Aftrican-American National Masters under the age of 14! Whether they continue on to Grandmaster is an open question, it's a long hard road, and financial support is virtually non-existent, but thy have already demonstrated considerable talent.
