Fischer vs. Reshevsky US Championship 1963. A grainy and blurry photo no doubt due to the prohibition of a flash. You can see the lamp blooming.

This is the only known photo that captures the chess imp that had been whispering chess moves into Reshevsky's ear ever since he was a boy in a sailor suit.

OK, is that 1962-63 or 63-64 (aka 11-0)?

That game was played Dec 1963 and so is part of the 11-0 sweep.

Chess, believe it or not, was once quite the fad among the Hollywood stars. In the 1940s it was Herman Steiner's charm and vigor that drew them together at his Steiner Chess Club, later called the Hollywood Chess Group. Heavy hitting stars like Bogart, Bacall, Boyer, and Ferrer attended the club, and chess was played on the movie sets as well. Though Steiner was to die in 1955, he was instrumental in organizing the two Pan-American tournaments in 1945 and 1954.

Those stars infected with the chess bug kept on playing though, and chess could still be found in the same places. Here we see Fischer and Reshevsky in 1961 on the eve of their match, which was to be aborted with a tied score (though officially the game Fischer didn't show up to was forfeited, it's always been referred to as a tied match for all intents and purposes), in a publicity shot with Jose Ferrer.

Fischer was 17, not 16, as the caption says.

As for Steiner, perhaps later a few pictures and his story.

This one gets me every time. Imagine having to sit at a table for 5 hours with this guy staring at you :)

Yes, Kasparov really has presence. I remember when he played Nigel Short in the 90s and it was covered on British TV. Short seemed totally out of his depth, even before they started playing!

Later thought: if you hold on for 5 hours, you're probably not that bad yourself, but...man...THE STARE!

That's the Chess version of the 1000 yard stare!

THANKS FOR THE THREAD GOLDENDOG.  THAT WAS THE STUFF OF LEGEND.
