greed should be distinguished with courage... the problem is that you can't tell which is which untill you take the piece...

Goalkeeper, since I could break my leg, or even worse my spine if I would ever try to drible... Me and the soccer ball are not best friends. My face on the other hand seems to love soccer ball very much. Why did you say you would regret playing with me?

I am not nearly as good as my score would seem to indicate.  Getting back to greed, I go through phases of greed and purging, as in holding off making moves in games I am destined to lose so that I can hopefully get a new highest score (my greedy phase), and then I go ahead and lose my lost games all at once (my purging phase).  Almost like Joseph and the seven good years and seven bad years.  Anyway, now I am holding off losing the tons of games that I am about to lose.  Once I do, you will have a much more relaistic view of what my rating should be.

It matters to me at certain times, but not at other times.  I guess we all have our moods, right?

could traps exist in chess, without greed?

traps yes, but greed is taking pieces without thinking about consequences.

not necessarily.  although greed could be a material collector - greed

is an impulse that can be toyed with and exploited by an opponent.

if the trap is forced there is no choice, but a player that does not play

to collect material can be caught in a "greedy" moment.

Did you read my post?  Greed and stupidity are two different things.

so stupidity can not be motivated by greed?

Maybe.  But even if so, the cause of losing material, and perhaps the game, would be the stupidity.  I guess you will argue that stupidity is the proximal cause, and greed is the root cause?

Oh no, not another one!  And right here in Montgomery County, too.  But funny that neither one of us is a Redskins fan!

no, stupidity can stand on it's own.

just want to make the point that greed can cause stupidity, and in

such cases it is the root.  greed can also produce a winning position,

which feeds the behavior and develops a greedy player.

Vince you should try and reach a zen like calm before choosing your move - eliminate all thoughts of Greed, Angry, Fear, Horneyness and make the move that's within your chi.

You can be too greedy in your games and overlook a better move that, although it doesn't win material, will result in a winning position for your forces. If you can, however, always try to win the material advantage. Let's say you have executed a Kingside attack and are keeping up the pressure, but your opponent's defences are holding. Suddenly you see that you can win two extra pawns if you break off the attack, and you do so; transposing into a winning endgame. Although this might be considered "greedy", you should always be alert to opportunities of this kind. Sometimes we lose games because of the most obvious mistakes...
