    You asked a question concerning the number of levels at which the Chess Atomaton HAL9000 is capable of playing. The answer is 8. Level 9 is timed tournament play. Level 8 will generate a full game-tree looking 7 half-moves (ply) ahead, and will extend the search to 30 half-moves (15 moves) on captures, promotions and king-in-check situations. HAL is true A.I. It does not use an opening book.
