So you can play people without affecting your rating. Friendly games, greeter games, games where you don't want to try, etc., are all good candidates for unrated games.

Mostly for games between a friend and myself. For instance, we play OTB sometimes and when we can't get together, we play on Chess.com. We decided that we don't want ratings to be a factor at all, and since we could conceivably play more games between one another than we might with all other opponents combined, we'd end up skewing our ratings due to the multitude of matchups between us.

Yes, unrated games gives you a chance to play that wacky opening that you learned last week, or to play your friend who smashes you every time but you still enjoy their company, or just to learn some strategies from a stronger opponent.

I play chess not because I want to increase my rating, but because I love the game. Rating isn't everything.

Some of my friends and I play unrated games where we can discuss previous moves and possible alternatives. We use them as sort of training games

Playing against:

friends, stronger players, worse players

Also if you want to experiment with different openings, but you arent ready to play for real with them.

what if you lost the game?

yea i know whatcha mean. you can develop what we call friendly games. you wouldnt be so rivalry and warry with ur opponent. anyway, it would be on ur recent game list so really no problemo!

I play LOTS of unrated games.  When it comes to playing friends who are rated a lot lower than me, there really is no choice.  I don't want high pressure games that I MUST WIN or else lose 150 rating points for one slip.

If my friends gain the upper hand, I want to be free to resign or offer a draw rather than have to push on to try to turn it around to a win -- at all costs.  Something about sportsmanship.

Some would argue that there is no point to ratings and they only detract from the game.
