    cheating?

Have you looked at the group forum that is devoted entirely to discussion of cheating, including often having input from staff?  There are always several threads active, including discussing specific cases.

The issue isn't completely dismissed on chess.com, just corraled into a single discussion area.  Sort of a sanctioned red-light district for the forums.

    Greetings,

I agree there is a forum for this topic... but it is a non-forum in my opinion.

I think many of us have started out playing a 1200 player and ended up having a winning game. Only to lose because ( a miracle happened ) and we ended up playing over 2000 rated player. In fact, a very well known chess player and former contributor to this site said "I don't play internet chess any more for this very reason" - I paraphrased this quote.

He also quit contributing to the site.

Personally I think it's a matter of style.

    My style:

I play on line as if OTB.

I don't look the opening moves in a book or database (which BTW how is different than using a computer?)

I don't double check my moves using a computer to make sure I am not making a daft move. (I suspect some folks do this...)

And like I said many times before, I don't really have a problem with folks using "aid". I just want to play with folks who play in the same style as me (OTB) but on the internet.

You must have gotten pretty desperate for attention after letting this thread go more than a month without re-whining your same old routine.

Online Chess is the modern equivalent of Correspondence Chess which was around well before chess engines. Players played by mail and sent their moves to each other, often over great distances (making the games much slower than even the slowest of our time controls, 14 days/move)!

Anyway, opening manuals and other books were completely allowed in these early forms of correspondence chess. The games can be of much higher quality due to the large length of time allowed to each player! The tradition of allowing books and journals etc. continues into Online Chess. (You should not be using them in Live.)

Nytik, thanks for a thoughtful reply... But yet again I ask how is that different than using a computer... With a computer, you can look up all the opening moves with percentages of success.

According to this site for on line rules: It is ok to research moves as long as you don't use a computer for individual moves... I must be daft....But ...If consult databases or books, are you not using a computer. You can fill in the blanks
