First off thnx for reading...

I'm not that good of a player (1200 give or take).  I want a FREE computer chess program, with a engine that I can adjust to be challenging. (winboard kicks my ass).  secondly I want to be able to view PNG's in the same program so I can try to learn from my mistakes.  ANY IDEAS?  I use Mayura now... but the board is so small and I can't figure out how to load a PNG, if I even can.

Thnx for all the help, I know you will.

Well, I notice you say free, but if you are willing to spend some money, Chessmaster is a very wise investment.

As for free stuff, chess.com is a GREAT place to be! I also recommend chessgames.com, they have a lot of good things.

Hope I helped!

I don't have an answer for you.  I do have a question, though.  Do you have a problem with the Ebony heads wearing out a bit faster than the standard Pinstripes?

Personally,

i think Winboard is pretty sweet. You can adjust Winboard. I believe its on a time per move basis, but still, as a beginner, it can still be quite harsh.

FRITZ 11 has just been launched.  Hence copies of Fritz X will be going cheap.  Fritz X is very configurable, and may give u what u are looking for.

However, if you are 'starting off',  just play games here - its free - and you get the best possible experience by playing Joe Public on the WWW.  You are in the right place here.  You may get hammered by other players to start with, but you will improve (all things being equal).

Arena http://www.playwitharena.com on top of Fruit http://www.fruitchess.com is a pretty good option. It's free and cross platform.

Seriously try the download section on this website. I recommend der bringer, it's in german, but you can adjust it's strength to you're level.

Mayura has just been updated. The board is now bigger and it can open PGN files as well.
