The more you play with a single opening, the more practice you get with it and the better you are at recognizing the patterns resulting from it.  The real question is: do you want to improve and know chess better and become a better player (note: I did not say increase your rating, I mean increase your skill) or do you want to have fun and play something totally unexpected and leave the book after two moves?  Neither side will know what to do, but your opponent might have better tactics than you.

Conclusion: For improvement, I'd stick to the same opening, but it might be fun to try something crazy every now and then.

International Master Mike Basman was a supporter of "maverick" openings and defences but if you leave the book lines you will find out that others have tried this and your opponent will exploit the probable weakness of the position and exploit it.

ultimately we have to know most openings, but better to master one then move on to another than to become "jack of many openings but master of none"
