Highest Player Beaten statistics

THis is a question for the chess.com staff and just to get some views from the other members.

I find the player statistics a really useful tool and am constantly trying to better my rating and highest player i have beaten. I regularly play a person who is over 2000 rated and have never got close to beating him but hope to improve enough one day to get there. He unfortunatly lost to me on time and it now shows i have beat him.

i don't feel wining on time in correspondance chess to be a true victory. i was happy with the 19 points, don't get me wrong but the previous highest player i had beaten, as in checkmate or he resigned was 1800 +

i was wondering whether there was a way to put it back to my previous highest beaten player as it will take me years (maybe never) to a player rated over 2000.

What did the rest of the chess.com community think?

    Comments welcome

Agreed. I've thought exactly the same thing before. I think the 'best win' stat should be the highest rated person that you have checkmated or who has resigned a game with you.

I agree that a win on time at correspondence chess is a bit hollow, and while it should definitely count as a win in terms of rating points, etc, it isn't really an achievement to be proud of as your 'best ever' result.

I think that it would be a good idea for people that are that good at chess to spend a little money and subscribe to chess.com. That way they would not time out and we would all benefit. So come on SPEND SOME MONEY

Agree. I have won my best beaten player on time, but I couldn't satisfy because I didn't gain experience from that guy.

Everytime I come close to beating my best, I'll either blunder the game, or their rating will drop before they lose, just low enough so that is doesn't count...:(

perhaps, an interesting addition would be a "highest rated draw" stat: a 1500 drawing a 2200 is still mightly impressive....perhaps moreso than a win vs. a 2000.

i've had many games where the opponent stops making moves right before a mate of when the position is hopeless, i dont feel those games are hollow. I just consider that a resignation. this is more complicated then it seems because even though your idea is good, not everyone will agree. it might be better the way it is right now

Even the best make mistakes and chess punishment is clear I think the rating will balance itself and beating the best should be off record Only your present rating represents your true self

Agreed.  The highest ranked player I 'beat' resigned after one move or so in a tournament I was playing in and then closed his account I think.  He's a full 100 points higher than my actual mated best and I'd like to see his name removed.

I have won a couple of games on time outs which I do not really consider wins. Nothing against winning but I enjoy it more if I had done something to have an outright win in the game rather than having a player not log in and complete the game when the game was still in the developing stages.

Thing is... people could just leave their games to timeout instead of resigning...

Thought that point should be made.  All in all I have no opinion.

You have an option to not win on time.  I'm not sure whether this is a premium feature or not.

Game Preferences- Auto-win on time option is checked.  Uncheck it and you won't win on time.

i Think that making the option best win presonalized (hope it spells like that) would solve troubles for all.

i.e that you could select a game from your archive as your best win.

but personally i dont mind it the way its now.

I agree with this. A best game should be what you thought was your best game.

I agree with you all, though I want to point out an option in the settings which allows you to choose to claim a victory on time.  (The default is to claim it automatically).  I have never used this setting, but thought it might be nice to point it out.

Everyone's rating is affected by time.  There's always a chance that the "2000" player achieved some of his rating by winning on time, so there is nothing unethical about beating that player because of timeout.

    Just enjoy the win!

I agree. I never claim win on time-out myself without giving my opponent ample time and messages that he timed-out on me. I've lost a lot of good games from time-out due to internet service provider problems but it's alright, it's the fun, learning and enjoying the game i'm after and finding new friends in the process.
