In the Under 10 Section at the just completed World Youth Chess Championships, the U.S. finished with five players placing in the top 10 (1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th). For those that follow international chess at the youth level... is this typical for the U.S. to do so well vs. world competition in any of the youth sections or is this really an amazing finish and some hope for future U.S. chess?

Nope. I'm afraid we will always suck (unless we get a new shipment of Russians).
lol
Is this a typical result though?... doing well at the youth stage?
Yes, actually it is quite impressive. But then, I believe we generally have to go on and find actual jobs later, so we can't spend nearly as much time on the game as the developing players in other countries (OK, Russia).
Jobs.. yea.. probably true. But I coach middle school chess (two time county champs) and my players and not too many players from our rival middle schools even go on to play in the high school division. Too many other things of interest.. I suppose.

I agree, for me it seems like US chess is expanding and getting more popular..
Troff got 2nd in U12 so thats a good achievement as well for the Americans.
Lol.. well... I KNOW you will be play'n in to highschool and beyond.

With ever increasing competition for a relatively small tournament pie, players will have to divert some attention to other means to generate income. Only the cream will stay on top...this is the market model. Yes the USA has some great potential on the horizon...but the rest of the world has even more potential. The second coming of Fischer? I believe he is already here...but he does not fly the American colours...
Then again, neither did Fischer...
