just start playing long games in live (15 + min) they're no less exciting than blitz games.

First admit that you have a problem, then admit that you have no control over your problem, then acknowledge the all-powerful creator as having that control and then give your life to him.  I don't know, 8 more steps.

Start a blitz game then go for dinner. After the 15th subsequent time-out, you'll start to crave longer games.

It's easy to stop playing blitz, it'll all be over in just five minutes

Simply take up bullet instead, blitz will soon seem to be too long and tedious to be of any interest :)

lol you guys are hilarious. i'd have to say...eh, let loose and play 3 hours in a row of bullet against the same guy and lose ninety of them while winning ten. then pretty soon your brain will be fried, your hand shaky, and you won't want to play for another million years. :)

    problem solved?

Set the timer to a lengthier time for the game and take more time to choose your moves, it's that easy....

Blitz chess is pretty much tons of fun, and improving at chess is work so...

First you have to find a replacement for your leisure time that you normally fill with blitz.  So that psychologically speaking, when do you spend time on chess, you'll be able to make it work and not play.

Also, consider setting a tangible goal to work toward in chess.  It could be a rating, a book, a skill set, tournament prep, etc.  So again psychologically, you'll have a reason to not play blitz when you really want to anyway.

I hear one self motivation tip is to reward yourself somehow when you accomplish a goal... so if you play no blitz for a week, go ahead and play ____ hours on the 7th day or something.

    My two cents.

ask yourself why you make so many stupid blunders so often. then find the cause. if you don't have enough time to think of good move then stop playing blitz.
