I am rated at 2000 on this site but I'm sure that's hugely inflated (my avg opponent rating is only 1400).  I'm curious about getting a "real" rating, but don't know anything about what organization gives them out or what.

I live in Iowa City, IA, USA.  How would I find the local chapter of whatever organization?  Do I need to register for a tournament?

Thanks for any pointers!

Um... You can try USCF or FIDE. I'm not too sure about local registration, but you can try online at their website.

There is an Iowa State Chess Association that will have a list of all clubs and events in your state. You will also need to join the USCF (again you check on line) and they will have a list of events as well
