How to assess a board position to determine the best move possible?

    Interesting.  I basically do a mini-SWOT analysis before each move that's not dissimilar:

    Strengths (Power)
    Weaknesses (Weaknesses)
    Opportunities (Options and Mobility)
    Threats (Oddly missing from Adams' list, but perhaps envisioned as a subset of Weaknesses)

    Criteria aside, I think the most important thing I do is to repeat this prior to every move -- no matter how solid a combination or sequence of moves I've calculated I always reassess the situation prior to comitting my next move in case I missed something on my previous analysis.  I think it's this aspect of the methodology specifically that has spared me from the largest number or mistakes.
