I found several ways helped me to improve my chess. One, was to play chess against stronger players; two, by reading books and three, by analysing my games or getting friends/players stronger than myself to analyse my games.

I have tried several suggestions posted by someone whose name I don't remember. I found them helpful.

    1) Open with e4

    2) Answer e4 with e5

    3) Answer d4 with d5

I was afraid to play open games and was playing closed games almost exclusively. Once I made a decision to follow the above advice I began to improve. Importantly, I had a lot more fun. Just because the grandmasters have worked through the King's Gambit doesn't mean you and I can't have a hoot playing it!
