How to improve a position

Many times I have a position that I cannot attack with and repeatedly I have heard "improve your position a little"

Are the concrete examples of areas to look to improve a position?  I once saw a list of about 10 pointers for endgames.  It was helpful.  I am searching for something similar but applying to improving positions.

 Wow, this is getting really old. This same joke pops up in every forum asking about mating or positions. Why don't you try to give him a real answer?
