Any ideas for how can i make with normal material a travel chess set?

I had an idea. With an empty cd case (without the plastic inside thing where we put the disk) use pins (i believe is how you call it in english, those things to put papers in a wood board or something). Printing the figures of the pieces on the pins and making 64 little holes in the cd case with a paper inside with the design of the boards. We could use the cd case to keep the pins inside

 Any other ideas?

what i did was i got three pieces of flat leather (or vinyl)  and cut one piece into 16 pocket shape pieces and sewed them onto another piece of leather (so all the pieces could be held in the pockets i installed little buttons) and with my first piece of  leather (the one without pockets) i painted the 64 squares and made alternate ones black.

The pieces are the hard part what you do is you get a template of the pieces you want and cut them out twice into hard cardboard.

Put a little cut on the top of one piece of cardboard and then a little cut on the bottom of the other piece of cardboard so they can slide together to become 3D and playable then you can unslide them to make it portable.
