strong players don't guess, they are normally able to figure out what is going on in the position, get play what you think are the best moves and always expect your opponent to play the strongest move as well

You need to stop hoping your opponent falls for your trap, and start making moves which are strong against every reply.

If you threaten two different things at once, your opponent will often only be able to answer one of them.

Play simple beginnings is complex and  that depends on the strength of your opponent

Work out your moves and look directly at the opposite side of the board so it looks like you are working something out on the other side

Most plans tend to be obvious, as they require some kindof preparation, or they are common to a particular pawn structure, etc. Don't think that obvious is weak, though.

For example, the plan for a position in an endgame where you have an extra outside passer is obvious but extremely effective.

I feel that tactics are much less obvious (some less obvious than others), so you should always spend time at the beginning of each move to scan for tactics.

but don't be upset if your opponent anticipates your plan; you should anticipate his/her's as well! It's not like poker; simply knowing someone's idea (their pocket cards) doesn't make that idea less strong.
