I look at it this way. If you have mastered what not to do, figuring out what to do should be that much easier. I once had an old mad destroy me in a game of chess. I asked him how many games I needed to win in order to be good. He told me I wouldn't be good until I had lost a thousand games. I am not sure if I have lost 500. It seems like a ton of losses for me inspite of this.

I read somewhere where a master said that if you are thinking more than 10-15 min about a move likely its too long and your doing something wrong. (i would recommend soltis-how to choose a chess move)

I spent 30 minutes on one move last night at my regular thursday night OTB tournament.
Did you end up moving e4 or d4?

Funnily enough it was a center pawn push. Gave up the exchange to advance a passed pawn. Won the game against a guy rated 200 points hgher than me. But the computer said I screwed up and that with perfect defense I was losing ;(

I can completely relate to the original post. Blitz is very frustrating for me (see my avatar ...). I don't mind losing, but I mind losing 5-10 consecutive games by blundering every single one away as I did yesterday and today, dropping from 1230 to 1130 again. Every time I think now I'm at least a stable 1200 in blitz, this happens. At tournament time controls I'm a much stronger player (1400, at the moment with a 1600 rating performance at my current OTB tournament). Now everybody tells me that slow chess is the "real" chess, but I still find my terrible blitz skills embarassing ... if I play blitz with someone at my club nobody believes me my real rating ... so I keep on trying to improve, but my highest blitz rating was at December 2010 and there was no improvement ever since :-(
So far I could keep myself from destroying walls or furniture, but the lifespan of my PC mice has shortened considerably since I play online chess, and my neighbours probably think I'm mad and are afraid of me because of my frustrated screams.
OK look at blitz as a learning experience. What sort of mistakes are you making? are you missing pins? simple attacks? Look at 20 games an see what your typical tactical mistake is and use it to focus your study.
Blitz is especially helpful in learning openings. Play your main openings and build the knowledge base of moves after each 5-10 games.
Not liking losing is fine but its easier to manage if you put a purpose to losing an become stronger by doing so.

Nothing has ever frustrated me the way chess frustrates me. In the span of about 15 games, I've lost what... 13? And every time I want to put my fist through a wall.
Does anyone else feel like beating the piss out of something when they play? Because I hate this ****ing game.
Try not to hate the ****ing game, but instead hate your ****ing opponent, this will help you become more determined to learn and beat the ****ard next time you play.
Thats what i do anyway. U bunch of ****ards lol !

Could you imagine the opening poster playing poker?

After 100 games you would have really hardened fists ,so that you can switch to kung fu! Or play the main role in a future Karate Kid moive!

chess sucks and so do you.

Too bad it's so damned addictive at the same time.
At least with chess I feel like I'm making progress though. You really want frustration? Take up golf.

Holy crap. I am a grown man and even I would be afraid to beat that devil child.

Actually, I don't think there is too much wrong with smashing something (preferably some near-worthless trinket) after a particularly frustrating loss. It IS extremely annoying to know that the only reason you lost is by making some ridiculous blunder - we're better than that, and we know it! But then again, we're not better than that, because we're only human. And there is the problem - learning to come to grips with one's inherent imperfection. It's a tough lesson to learn, especially for us intellectual gladiator types.
That said, definitely take breaks, often. And when you want to punch the wall, punch the floor instead. It's stronger. :)
Well, as far as I see he's down a queen. I'd have the same look on my face then :)
I don't know if this was an answer to my post or to the original one. My problem with blitz are not any specific tactical mistakes, but very simple ones: I keep on hanging pieces (if I try to play fast enough) or I am too slow and lose on time (if I try to play decent and blunder-check all my moves).
I'd guess that there should be SOME improvement for an intelligent human being if he does something almost daily over years, but this doesn't seem to be the case with blitz chess (or even rapid chess) and me. Maybe I should accept the fact that I have a slow brain and only play long games anymore.
Yet I would say that black has an advantage, just count how many pieces he has. It looks like two rooks and two minors to me, unless I'm just imagining something.

I don't hate chess, but on this website I only ever play blitz, and I DO hate losing because of mouse slips (as has happened on a few occasions), and because of spilling beer on my keyboard (as happened earlier today).

No, I hate chess too.
It's very mechanical and very dull.
I really could never get into chess theory for that very reason.
Every chess writer feels the need to post every single variation for every single game.

I think we get so ticked off when we lose because in most cases we realize that we could have won. I do get upset sometimes, especially when my opponent uses something like the Parham or some other silly Queen led offense. Sadly, at my level of play I run into this all the time.
Chess reminds me of golf. When I used to play golf I wasn't great but I had moments. The rest of the time was a pursuit of more of those moments. I find chess, for me, to be similar. I hate losing but find winning very exhilirating so I keep playing in pursuit of the next exhilirating win. Such extasy all the sweeter when I beat someone who has opened with the Parham! ;)
I had that happen yesterday. Slip of the trac pad (laptop), lost my rook and then the game.
