I hear this particular piece of trash all too often.  The most eloquent speakers and writers I've had the pleasure of being audience to have almost all had filthy mouths.  Masters of the brush don't omit black from their art because it is dark.  On the contrary, they recognize the power and beauty that it contains when properly harnessed.  So it is with profane language.  For those skeptical of my position on the matter, I reccomend the following writers: Kurt Vonnegut, David Sedaris, and Charles Bukowski.

That said, I do believe foul language should be kept out of Chess.com.  Simply put: most people don't like it.  I do dream of a day when intent rather than content carries more weight.

I personally try not to use profane language for just the reason stated by Silentfilmstar, though the whole idea of profanity still strikes a curious tone in me. Who decided these words are profane? Who said "ok each language has to have a few choice words we can use to really vent our frustration..."

I mean, is a word created profane? Or does it become profane by its usage?

I never knew the answers... until i played golf!

Hear hear.  It's for this same reason that I despise the use of poor substitutes for profanity (Frick or fudge, as examples).

I know what you wanted to say -- so say it.  Just because you think you've censored yourself doesn't change the intent.

I thought of a good analogy to illustrate my point: the augmented fourth.  An augmented fourth is an interval in music.  It has a dark and dissonant sound and is actually referred to as 'diabolus in musica'(the devil in music).  Many brilliant works contain this interval.  There was a period of time, however, during which the use of such an interval was avoided entirely because of its demonic sound.  It is my assertion that music suffered horrendously during that period.

I cringe when I hear 'replacement swearing.'  Euphemisms are vile things.

"or will they just refund my money and kick me off anyways?"

No, they will ban you and keep your money.  You're in violation of contract so they don't have to return it.

i woud hope that you would learn when you get older than prime time tv is not the standard for what is good.  prime time tv is regulated by the dollar and when it is only the dollar that rules you get little value.  read a good book.  speak well.  listen to the radio.  play chess.

prime time tv is not the standard for what is good but it shows the level of acceptancy from the general public. if what's said on tv is not accepted it would not be allowed. censorship has it's role in determining what's accepted and what's profitable for television networks. but like i've stated earlier in this thread, i don't have to swear and i'm gonna comply with the rules i just like to push the toleration envelope.

join the Open Discussion Group, we are a bit more relaxed

we can be found at www.chess.com/groups/home/open-discussion

we don't have as many forums running but they are virtually free of idiots who whine about language

That is probably the most disgraceful remark I have read on this site.

It smarts of arrogance.

I think they're stupid and useless. Its FUN to swear and trashtalk. It makes it a more enjoyable experience to dish it out and to recieve it. It makes the game more intense because it feels more like you versus the other person, reather than you versus their 16 pieces. If you dont like it, then just ignore it. Its that simple.

And you're 28 years old? Wow, you sound like some kids I know in highschool, who stay stuff like that to look cool, but only end up looking stupid and arrogant.

I'm 16, and I swear, sure, but I also know when its appropriate. I follow the same guidelines as TheGrobe has stated earlier. And depthshaman, chess is often referred to as a gentelman's game because it is thought to be a game of which intellect plays a role in. You say it irks you, no offense to anyone, but the whole "God is the best thing ever" irks me a bit too, but I don't go about saying how I hate it so, and neither should you. If you really wanna swear and trashtalk, go make you're own website, and trashtalk people as much as you want; don't taint Erik's good site.

It is?!?!?!?! The desire to swear is an indication of a desire to swear, nothing more. I think everyone has some narcissism in them, I think it's part of being human, but I'm not considered by those who know me as overly so. But, when it is appropriate, I like to swear. I think it's fun, I think it can enhance a joke, I think that there are times where those are the only words to truly express a thought or feeling. Knowing nothing else about me, I guess in your mind that makes me a narcissist?
