I have won twice with out really winning. One opponent dropped out after the first move and I was awarded no points, which I would not have wanted anyways. The other however selected 24hrs to which I stepped away as I often I do and he was unable to return in time to make his move, I therefore won,,not.. Now my rating has gone up un-wantedly. Is this just a normal part of the on-line playing system? Or is there away to remove unwanted victory points?

If he lost on time after 24 hours it's not your fault. You can only run out of time if it's your turn to move. Whether you are at the board or not, it doesn't matter. He should have made his move before the time was up and that would have put the pressure back on you, and you would have had to play a move within a further 24 hours, or lose. Time is an element in most games of chess; both players know the rule, so if you run out of time, tough. It's no different to blundering your king into checkmate. Take the victory and the points with good grace. The same will be the case on every other chess site (though some don't default the opponent automatically, but allow you to decide to claim a win or not, as you see fit...but if you fail to claim the win within a further set time, the web master will default you both, which may be what you are hunting for..if so try ChessWorld.net). The same will also apply in all OTB games...once the allotted time runs out, you win whether you want to or not.

Thanks for the replies. I will not feel guilty about it then. I did offer a rematch so that's fair enough I suppose.

Sometimes you'll do the same things, and LOSE games you should've won. So I think it mostly balances out.

Don't feel guilty, and the offer of a rematch was far too generous.
