Too bad because rocket science pays much better.

You are correct. However, better ideas are usually the product of more consideration. More consideration takes more time.
It seems apparent that this line of debate involves something that is very debatable itself:
"...applying ideas doesn't take time. calculating and evaluating them does"
Part of the issue may be where one draws the lines between ideas like 'calculating, 'evaluating' and 'applying ideas'.
It seems, from what I've seen in the forums, there is a lot of debate as to what these things are and what is involved in the processes. The term 'applying ideas' could be defined in a number of useful ways.
So I would say it is quite concieveable that one might see 'applying ideas' as a quick process depending on how they defind 'applying ideas'.
In fact, correspondence chess is ideal for improving. Someone who is improving needs time to process the ideas and use them in real situations. That can ALWAYS happen in correspondence chess. That will happen only very rarely in blitz. Blitz is not worthless, but it is among the poorest choices for someone trying to improve.
I agree with above. I gained about 600 points U.S.C.F. in the past year and I have been playing a lot of CC.
"I'm sorry but applying ideas doesn't take time. calculating and evaluating them does. You fail, try again"
You demonstrate a clear lack of understanding of how people learn. Executing a concept that you have already mastered takes no time. That is true. The opposite is true for the learning phase. Significant time is required while learning new concepts. In fact research tells us that you can only learn about 3 new things between sleeping. So blitz can be possibly useful to refresh ideas that you have already fully mastered, but you will rarely use blitz to master new ideas.
If you are willing to spend 2+ hours per day on chess, hire a chess coach. Without a coach you will almost certainly spend 90% of your time studying the wrong thing.
No doubt a coach will be very helpful. But with all the great resources on the internet and plenty of experienced people who are willing to help, I don't feel one would really spend that much time studying the wrong things if they take advantage of these resources.
Besides, probably the first thing any GM would tell you anyway is MORE TACTICS!
Most blitz players end up perfecting their errors and stagnating.
I wish I had written that sentence. It's perfect.
Another vote for considering a paid membership here. ... So my advice is to go diamond.
I recently upgraded from Platinum to Diamond. Some of the videos are awful. Some are exceptional.
I get almost as much from Philip Sergeant's collection of Paul Morphy's games.
I do think that more time spent with Tactics Trainer, Chess Mentor, and Chess.com videos will do far more to help the OP reach his goals than time spent playing blitz.
I've played more than 100,000 games online over the past seventeen years. If I had spend enough time reading chess books that I had time for only 10,000 of those games, I would probably be a master (I'm a little below USCF Expert).
@rrtr1129 A coach is useful but I don't think it's the most important thing. The most important thing is to play constantly against higher-rated opposition, and the second most important thing is to study and practice tactics.
A coach is certainly not required, and may not be the most important thing, but I don't see how someone could improve faster than with a coach. If someone is going to spend close to 1000 hours per year improving at chess, it seems incredibly wasteful to spend even 10% of that time working on the wrong things.
If you were working on improving your health, you can read books and find exercises on the Internet, but if you want the fastest improvement you hire a personal trainer and a dietician and a personal chef and you consult with your doctor.
If you are running a business, you can read books and ask your friends who run businesses for advice, but for fastest improvement and to keep the business on the right track, you hire a consultant.
