On July 4th, 2009, I will begin a 1 year break from chess play. I will not allow myself to play a single game of chess for one calendar year. The only chess interaction will be in a study format. I feel like this will send my chess apetite into a frenzy and give me the needed boost to master the fundamentals of chess.

Best of luck to ya. I don't have that kind of will power yet. I need my chess fix.

Of course this is a personal choice.

However, all of the chess trainers and titled players, seem to reccommend a mix of play and study. The best balance (maybe this is at international level, i am not sure) is about 60% study and 40% play (quality is important in both cases).

I wish you all the best for the next year of your chess pursuits.

I suggest you go with your plan, but play a once- in- a-while game, like once every half year.
