Someone raised the point that courtesies might not be exchanged between opponents due to the international nature of the site & lack of a common language. I thought it might be nice to compile a list of basic pleasantries in as many languages as possible, and post it as a download for those who wish to use it, if Erik is in agreement.
French: Salut (hi), au revoir (goodbye), merci (thank you)
Spanish: Hola (hello), adios (goodbye), gracias (thank you)
If anyone wishes to correct me on these, or add more useful phrases, or similar in other languages, please go ahead.
In French "bon chance" is good luck, in Spanish it is "buena suerte".
Good game is something I'd probably say badly in either language. I'd hoped that other language speakers would post here & help to provide a way for us to be nice to those with whom we don't share a common language.
Who speaks languages other than French & Spanish?
Erik & Etienne, what would be the best way to say "good game" in Spanish/French???
Irish and Scots Gaelic:
Dia dhuit (dee-ah gwitch) - Hello (literally "God be with you") ;
Response "Dia is Muire dhuit" (dee-ah-ss-Mirreh-gwitch) - (God and Mary be with you - sorry, the Gaelic doesn't allow for Atheists, Humanists etc.).
Slan leat (slawn lat) - Goodbye (literally "Health with you" - we're less religious when getting rid of you, though some say "Slan agus beannacht" - "health and blessing").
Cluiche mhaith (cli-heh waw) - Good Game
Slainte (sloin-cheh) - Good luck - on second thoughts more like "Cheers" - It generally is accompanied by the raising of a glass of something more potent than water.
Oiche mhaith (ee-heh waw) - Good night
The phonetics are for people whose mother tongue is English. I realise the letters have different connotations in other languages.
That's a very good idea
"Good game" in spanish: "Buen juego" or "Buena partida"
irish and scots gaelic are slightly different but I'm not sure as to the depth of the difference
German:
'Hallo'(hi<- though many Germans say 'hi')
'Auf Wiedersehen'(formal), 'Tschuess' (informal) (goodbye)
'Danke/Dankeschoen' (thank you)
'Gutes Spiel' (Good game)
Croatian (can also be used with Bosnians, Montenegrins and Serbians without difficulty. Many Slovenes and Macedons will understand the language as well, but this is individual)
Hello = Zdravo ( = bok, informal)
Goodbye = Zbogom
See you later = Do videnja
Thank you = Hvala
You're welcome = Nema na cemu
Congratulations = Cestitam (be sure to say " Mashala! " to Bosnians)
Good game = Dobra partija
In French :
"good luck" => "bonne chance"
"good game" (after the game) => "bien joué" (only if you've lost), else, a simple smile is in order
