So I recently signed up to play unrated intro games to new members so help teach them or show them around and out of maybe a dozen not ONE has played even 5 moves.  Most create a profile and just never come back.  Why is that?  Anyone else going through this?

When people find out the game is hard, they flee for their lives!

There could be several reasons.

1. People thought they were entering onto a Live Chess server (which is an option of game play) and get thrown off by corrispondance games.

2. The corrispondance games are really for players who like to analysis moves deeply, and use it as a learning tool for live games. People coming here, perhaps, are trying to get the feel of the game, and find waiting 24 hours for a move is simply to slow.

3. I assume lots of other websites (not just chess ones) loss a lot of new members in under a week. They try it out and get distracted by something else or they have the attention span of a gnat and seek new stimuli.

4. Bad breath?

You know, #1 on your list...I HATED chess.com for about a week.  I kept saying "I just wanna play a normal game!"  I asked a lot of people if that was possible and I must have asked every stuck up asshole available bc no one told me about LIVE CHESS.  I accidentily found it eventually.  Good thing I didn't quit before I did!

Okay, I am confused. When I joined, I played an intro game, but I did not realize that it was unrated until after the game and noticed that my rating did not change. What do I have to do to make sure that I am playing a rated, instead of a non-rated game?

Intro games are automatically unrated so new members aren't penalized for games they didn't choose to play. Other games are by default rated, and you have to change them to be unrated.

Okay, as I understand, the Intro game is unrated.  However, any other game that I choose to play--for example, the Online Chess Matches--are rated, unless I mark/indicate in some way that the game is unrated for practice or training purposes.  Is that correct?

i am not bothered by them leaving and never come back, what i am bothered by are:

1. They just keep on telling me to move, no matter how many time i tried to explain to them its correspondance chess aka 3 days per moveYell!

2. Viewing the (so many) timed-out games - i can feel my mouse falling apart!

I quit the games for a while out of frustration but lately have played more good games than not.

Yes, that's right. In order to make a challenge unrated, you must click "Show Advanced Options" then there should be a drop-down box where you can change the type of game.

I was a greeter for chess.com for a while and all the timouts did not bother me too much.  The reason why i quit being a greeter was because of some very mean people :(

I knew some people don't like the chat option so i would just say:  "welcome to chess.com, if you have any questions feel free to ask."  I have had a few people respond by telling me to Shut up (somone even called me a fatty).  I got tired of wasting time on childish people so i stopped playing.

I did meet some really nice people though.

Go to SETTINGS.  There's an option there for Greeter.

I played around 200 games, maybe 10 played a full game.  It's normal.  Most people don't understand that it can take days, not minutes.

It took me a couple of weeks to figure that out.  Like I said, Im just glad I stuck with it long enough to figure it out.  Maybe there should be a big obvious display of some kind explaining things on the opening screen?  It seems like a pretty important issue since Id be willing to bet that we lose a lot of ppl simply bc they never hang around long enough to discover the LIVE CHESS option.
