I'm doing some sort of investigation and need the chess.com community help to gather data. I'll be grateful if you could help me, before hand thanks a lot. If your willing to help please keep reading, other way thanks for your attention this far and GL.

This is the way that you can help me.

  • i'll list 4 groups of players.
  • for each group i need you to select words that you think it describe the most the main characteristics of those players listed in that group. (minimum 3 words max 5 words)
  • select 1 player from each group the one you think represent the best that group according to the words you listed before (it doesn't have to be the best player, just the one that fit the best according your selected words)

 Group A.

  1. Tal, Mihail
  2. Anand, Viswanathan
  3. Shirov, Alexei
  4. Morozevich, Alexander

 Group B.

  1. Capablanca, J. Raul
  2. Karpov, Anatoly
  3. Petrosian, Tigran
  4. Adams, Michael

 Group C.

  1. Alekhine, Alexander
  2. Kasparov, Garry
  3. Fischer, R. James
  4. Lasker, Emanuel

Group D.

  1. Botvinnik, Mikhail
  2. Kramnik, Vladimir
  3. Steinitz, William
  4. Leko, Peter
If you agree completely with the word selection made by someone its ok just to quote it.

Once again thanks for your cooperation, BTW i need a sample of at least 100+ entries so i'll keep bumping this topic; sorry for the troubles this might cause you.

P.S: I.E:

Group X: Active play, Aggressive, Tactical fines, Attacking player, creates chaotic positions

Player: NameHere

Group A

Brilliant tactical strategists.

- Mihail Tal

Group B

Sound defensive specialists.

- J. Raul Capablanca

Group C

Objective attacking geniuses.

- Garry Kasparov

Group D

Strong overlooked players.

- Peter Leko

Reading over this I notice that each of these generalizations are essentially wrong and yet they are certainly the first thing to pop into my head.  This should be an interesting test, maybe afterwards you'll tell us what you're doing!

These are the categories and my reasons for choosing the players

A. Best in tactical  Positions- Mikhail Tal - in his prime he thrived best in dangerous position where brilliant tactics and sacrifices abound

B. Best in Simple Positions-  J.R. Capablanca - ability to almost magically whipped a winning position from seemingly simple or drawish position.

c. Best  Killer Instinct-  R. J. Fischer no doubt. He is simply is playing to win. And Fischer would win with devastating results : both 6-0 score vs Larsen and Taimanov. Crushing match scores vs.  Petrosian and Spassky.

e.Best in Championship Matches- M. Botvinnik - Champiosnhip match is Botvinnik's forte. If Boxing has Muhammad Ali , chess has Mikhail Botvinnik. No other Players  wins back the world chess title  more than 3 feat! Knowing his opponent weakness, scientific  preparation as crucial aspects of the game  and unmatched stamina brought Botvinnik success in defending and winning back the world chess titles several times against the best of his generations.

@ ih8sens

sure i'll tell the reason but cant do it right now cose it could affect the results.

@ Sarthe

the only way age could affect its if it have a relation between more age = more experience due that maybe the word selection might be a more accurate but that cant be proved so easily so ill not consider age as a factor, I'm thinking about using ranking but i've to analise the complete sample 1st.

@ mandelshtam & normajeanyates

Classification its needed for a deeper comprehension of the studied subject. & normajeanyates please erase one of your two posts help me to keep the topic as clean as posible.

And one more time THANKS

 Azoth:

your question as I understand it, is about the FIRST attributes that come to our mind, when looking at your 4 groups of chess players. This  is fully justified, since it is something about intuitive/clustering memory.

ok, here are my characterizations :

group A:  ignoring gravity.

group B:  elegance.

group C:  will and courage.

group D:  patience and accuracy.

I was too short:

1) Always the first player in each group is the one who represents that group in the

"purest" way.

2) I give a longer characterization now:

group A: ignoring gravity, exception against rule,

group B: elegance, lightness, safety,

group C: will, courage, power.

group D: patience, accuracy, depth.
