I have seen several threads here about questionable and irritating (for many) habits in chess. One of the best known and most common is those who refuse to resign no matter how lost they are. I would like to start a thread in which we list as many irritating habits (serious) as we can think of. Some will apply to otb play and others to online play and some to both, common sense will clue us in here I am sure. I will start by listing one that I find not only irritating, but insulting as well. Its when an opponent is losing (or clearly worse) and offers a draw.

lol...here we go again...but to stay serious as you requested Reb I will tell of my biggest pet peeve:

It is on an OTB game when someone plays their piece and they hold on to it for a few

seconds then act like they are planting it in the board by pushing down hard and giving the piece a

little shake and then releasing the piece like they did something important with it.

Like I am supposd to think it was a key move or something and be scared

I hope i painted a good enough picture of what I was referring to

Lol Jones ! I have seen this and many other ways to move pieces that are rather ......err, unique? There are those that do something similar to what you describe but "screw the piece into the square" a few turns before releasing it too.....Smile

Crumbs Vibius.  I think that a number of people are going to tell you that this is an all-age web site.  However, if you have experienced that problem, 'first hand' so to speak then I suggest that you inform your opponent that, unless he has said J'adoube, then touching that bishop constitutes a move.

I agree with the draw thing, though it amuses me rather than irritates me.  Some kid told me to 'f- off' while playing blitz when I pointed out that his offer of a draw when several pieces down was a little unlikely.  He resigned shortly after, mind you.  Draws are for stalemates near the end of a game.  Offering one when you're clearly getting a hammering is just cheeky.

Here's another one for you Reb...

how about your opponent staring at you the whole time you are contemplating your move

with eyes opened wide!!!

I resolved that one by staring back until they quit

and another tactic that I have encountered was my opponent feigning that he was falling asleep

that one surprised me because the guy I was playing seemed like a no nonsense player

I played him twice and each time he did that...I beat him anyway and never played him again

Another irritation I have experienced is the excessive "throat clearer", they usually complain that they have a cold. However its a bit odd that they seem to clear their throat excessively only when its my move and not when its theirs.

Read carefully now and you will see your name in the comment.  Then, refer to your now-deleted comment and you will see that I was gently chastising you and attempting to inject some humour into the discussion.

I just had one this morning. He threw down his peices and declared "mate", then left to go SMOKE! The move wasnt mate and we had to sit there waiting for him to come back.  Ii just bothers me when people dont act like the "gentleman's" game that this is supposed to be

I once lived in a guest house which took in newly released convicts.  Whilst playing chess with Gerry one night I made the mistake of asking him what he has been in prison before. "Murder" he replied.  I let him win.  Ever since then my pet irritation has been intimidation.

oh very good, i was slightly unsure as to if you actually meant bishop or not.

oh and the patronising 1st line was wasted. it was quite clear the reason i was confused was because of the very fact that my name was in there.

and you're clearly not that hot on the humour injection front.

I was young. I was foolish.  After that Gerry got a job at the docks and came home stinking of fish every night.  If you want to put me off a game of chess then just pin a haddock under the table.

Murder? I'd let him win, too. My pet peeve is online chess players who go on vacation, just to analyze the position a little closer. I am playing a game, I'm up a piece and I have a passer on the 6th rank guarded by my Queen and bishop. This guy goes on vacation?! There is no hope! I could win this game against Bobby Fischer. BTW, Bobby would have resigned a long time ago!

I have yet to encounter a vacationer but I believe Erik is trying to address that issue

by changing the vacation days.

Honestly though I have yet to encounter a vacationer so I am curious as to how often that really happens

Is it prevelant enough to warrant intervention by the Chess.com gods?

OTB people who take hours on making a move, even in the opening play. trying to predict into 15 moves and on the next move it never works out that way and they start over again. I know, you can't blame players for doing their best but for me it ruins the game.

Oh and people who nod their head on each move I make, good or bad or even castling.
