It looks like a White lost a truck, at most cases, isn't it?

On the other hand, you have to be a Master to beat it, like this, on the Master Games!

1...f6 34
67.6% 11.8% 20.6%

The best defence for black is d5.

f6 is playable, even at the master level.  But if Black wants equality, he should play something else.  But the psychological effect on the opponent would almost be worth the loss.

F6 has the advantage of setting the opponent to work busily trying to find a quick mate. If they focus on development, controlling the center, etc. then white shouldn't have trouble.

34  years ago I was wondering, why my partner at 5 min blitz game City Tournament played 1...f6?

I won! But he was played all 8 pawns on 6 raw for first 8 moves!

...f6 is not very good and isn't even scary for white to face. If your opponent is weak, they will immediatey try to mate you. But if they're not, they will control the center with harmonious piece development and after that can probably attack your weakened kingside.

Some people seem to forget that the game isn't going to win itself after f6.  White has to play accurately and Black has to make more inaccuracies.  It's fine for anybody under 2200.

I hate to point out the obvious, but with f6 you have won against lower rated opponents, and lost to higher rated opponents (with one exception in each case).

So the best defence is to play a lower rated opponent!

1.

1...f6 is not a winning move, but mind-breaking one!

After that, White have to play by own, from start...

2.

The upcoming positions are not so bored, as usual!
