Tell chess.com whether you think chess is an art or not. Remember that "art" could be a very loosely used term - in a sense, even something as technical as surgery could be seen as an art; in the strictest sense, even some drawings would not be considered art.

Personally, I consider chess to be an art.

So discuss what you think! =D

I think chess is an art because, it is the art of thinking and skill! :D

I consider art to be any form of self-expression. So, in the same way that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is self expression among chess moves. For me, chess is not an art. For Mikhail Tal on the other hand, his romanticism really comes through in his playing. I believe the man himself considered it an art form.

To make a long story short and a good point vague, it just depends. :p

One of my Philosophy Modules was on art. Cool

In any case, Chess is of course going to be considered/not considered art depending on the definition of art we are trying to use -- just like everything else on this plannet...pretty much.

Yes, but a very esoteric one.

Botvinnik said it was the art of analysis.

I subscribe to a pretty loose definition of art: quite simply, anything that can be presented in such a way that it has meaning beyond its function could be considered art.  It's Duchamp's fault, really -- incidentally, he was an avid chess player....

It is art in the sense that different games respond to different style of playing

I quote someone here, but I'm not sure who...

"All chess players are artists, but not all artists are chess players."

It's either that or vice-versa...

Well... I think you can say that chess.... creative chess... is art. When I go over some of the briliant games played by some of the most creative players in history (Morphy, Capy, Fischer, etc.)... then yes... to me...THATS art....

chess art

Art, to me, is something that is subjective, and cannot be proven.  That's why a matematics degree is in the Science category - it either is right or it is wrong (for the most part).

Therefore, chess is an art. A game can be beautiful no matter which side loses, and it's all about creativity. While it's true that in some positions, there is ONE correct move, while all others lose immediately, I do not believe that to be a science qualification.

Chess is art.  Cool

I could draw a picture but you wouldn't call it art.  That takes an artist.

The same applies to chess as art: it depends who's pushing the pieces.

Agree with Dozy. I'll add that the skill it takes to manipulate the game artistically, IMO, is reserved for IMs and above. Mainly above, and even then the "expressive element" is very limited compared to Literature, Music, the plastic arts, and so on.

Josh Waitzkin, when he was a young IM, was being interviewed on national TV and he said just that: He was beginning to understand how he could take part in the art of the game.

if you think chess is an art, then it is.  some people think mathematics is art.  some people think flying a jet at mach 5 is an art.  some people think a cracking goal from 35 yards out is art.  blah blah blah.  i've seen some pretty beautiful chess and i've seen chess that was art in the toilet.  speaking of, i saw a toilet once in a museum--hanging on the wall.  a toilet.  art baby--

Yes, there is no fine line between is it art or not art ? for some peoples can see it as art, but for me I don't but again I could have maybe the way how Bobby Fischer won his games beautifully. Also that could applied to another question is it game or a sport ? again there is no fine line between it, is just how we see it, is it science, math, romance etc. etc.

also worth noting, just because something is beautiful, doesn't mean it is art.

i wonder if on dungeons and dragons message boards if they all sit around talking about and arguing:  d&d--art or math? and then the really zany ones throw out--sport.

According to Wikipedia, "Art is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions."  When viewed from that perspective there's no doubt that chess is art.  Who hasn't been moved by a beautiful game or combination?
