Nobody likes it anymore. When I was younger in the 70's, it was on the TV all the time. What happened?

Chess is not Dead its played everywhere here in the U.S.  The reason why its not televised is that TV producers think its too slow!  We Chess players know better! its a game full of action but it maynot translate well on TV!

Tournament chess is dying, but I think internet chess is doing pretty well.

I've been playing chess for 35+ years and I have to say, I disagree that no one likes chess anymore.  Chess is extremely popular and is growing every day.

Just because something is on TV or not doesn't mean it is popular or not. There's reams of unadulterated junk on TV, but that doesn't make it any good.

Bobby Fischer became Chess World Champion in the 1970's and as a result, chess became more popular than it ever was.

I was not able to locate any reliable numbers for
this year but According to Grandmaster
Susan Polgar, four-time women's world chess
champion, there are at least over 700 million
    chess players worldwide.
This makes chess one of THE most popular sports
    around the world.
Chess federation estimated in 2006 about
    600 million players world wide.
Does anyone else have more current and reliable
figures. Obviously chess is not dead
    ....tsk tsk

I am seeing growth in tournament chess because of all the cheaters in Internet chess. I won a recent tournament that put $500 into my wallet. This isn't done with Internet chess.  All in all, tournament chess is far more fun and rewarding than the cold, lifeless and sterile world of Internet chess.

TV producers think its too slow? That can't be right. What about golf or cricket?

Dead or not, I'm sure we can all agree that it's not a sport.

They could make TV Chess more popular if they included has-been celebrities.  For example, Danny Bonnaduce could play Lindsay Lohan, or Gary Busey could play a hallucination.

I think that when Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov in 1997 the people who viewed chess as part psychology/intuition and part pure math felt a bit disillusioned.  It made chess mastery less of an art form since no machine (so far) is capable of art, and Deep Blue defeated the best of the best.  By art form I mean a combination of technique (objective standards) and creativity (subjective/personal standards not dependent upon technique).  Interestingly, Kasparov after the match said that he sensed a level of creativity within the computer's play.  IBM of course denied any level of human interactivity or cheating.

sport is an organizedcompetitiveentertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. Generally speaking, a sport is a game based in physical athleticism. Activities such as board games and card games are sometimes classified as "mind sports," but strictly speaking "sport" by itself refers to some physical activity. Non-competitive activities may also qualify, for example though jogging or playing catch are usually classified as forms of recreation, they may also be informally called "sports" due to their similarity to competitive games.

@ Grimjohn -Thanks for being such a gentlemen and pointing out my error .So I used the wrong term shoot me !

Chess is that. But let's not discuss this subject as it will quickly get out of hand and go nowhere. It will turn this thread into a multi page trollfest.
