Does anyone know of a situation where it would be advantageous to promote to a knight instead of queen. I suppose it might be possible to have a situation where promoting to Knight would cause check mate. Just curious.
The other main reason for underpromotion is where promoting to a queen would result in stalemate.
I´ve onced promoted to a bishop to deliver checkmate.
Mostly because I didn't have any queen or spare rook to place upside down.

Sometimes in r v. p endgames, promoting to a knight with check staves off a mate in one.
Yes, usually to give check. A much more difficult problem is a reason why you would want to promote to a bishop...
