This is a recent game i played. My postional play was very bad as i had doubled-up pawns in two files and i thought i was going to lose. But luckily the pair of doubled- up pawns actually helped me win the game.

Doubled up pawns are good if they help take control of the centre

not to be rude or anything but it was not the doubled pawns that helped you win, it was the open file for your doubled rooks and the good bishop placement and the bad moves of your opponent

It was a 5 mintue game, bogus moves are expected to save time. And buy the way the b-file wasn't open.A file is only open when their isnt any pawns.

Doubled pawns aren't bad if they're extra pawns. ;) Nice tactics. Of course play wasn't perfect, but you took advantage of the holes he presented you rather nicely.

Doubled pawns can be bad, but that is generally only in situations where the lead of the pawns is blocked so that the second one just ends up being stuck behind it. If they open (or semi-open) a file, support other pawns or pieces, help control the centre, or can be forced to be traded off, they aren't really a problem and can in some cases be beneficial, especially if, like I said, they are extra pawns.

well first of all it wasn't the b-file

second of all, half-open files are considered open esp. in your case

imo doubled up pawns are only a significant disadvantage in the end game.

I would have casled long on move 12 tbh.. and castling kingside with the open g file was a bit silly.... in fact from move 12, white's play sucked, he basically handed over both open files... and generally didn't challenge the positioning of the black pieces and also failed to deal with rising threats.

If queens are off the board, you don't really need to castle. So doubled f-pawns, can be a big advantage, since you have a great pawn center. Also, you have a nice open file to your opponents king, and your King is much more powerful in the middle of the board where it is mobile and able to defend your pawn center.

If you're opponent has no queen and only 1 bishop, castling can actually weaken your position.
