You heard it here first. Gary Kasparov is going to return to competitive chess. Actually the current super-tournament going on plans to let him join the festivities.
Of course I'm joking...
However, how do you think he would be doing right now in that tournament?
DrSpudnik
It's hard to say. I mean, it's not like asking how Morphy would do...but Kasparov is getting close to beingout of chess for enough years to allow major changes in upper level theory. But who knows. He'd probably do OK, but I don't think he'd win the thing.
orangehonda
He said he stays up on theory, and even develops new opening ideas to see if any one else discovers them... so far he said for the most part, no one has.
But that may just be the arrogant old Kasparov we all know. If it's true though, and he regularly plays through all the top games, and he's current, you have to question his age. I'd say he's still elite player, likely still top 10, but put the elite few like Anand, Kamnik, and Topa above him. Maybe Carlsen.

Garry K IS A STRONG-WILLED PERSONALITY WHO, IF HE SO DECIDES, CAN challenge all the elite players and win .He is still in touch with Carlsen and Anand and definitely not out-of-touch with chess.
Estragon
I don't doubt he could be very competitive - look at Lasker, who came back to win New York 1924 (then the strongest tournament of all time) at age 55. A few years later he was 2nd to Bogoljubov in a strong event in Poland, and then finished third at Moscow 1935 - the only undefeated player - at 65.
Gazza's biggest problem might be his physical condition. If he hasn't kept up his strict regimen (and it looks as if he has not), coming back to top level competition could be tough. But his problem wouldn't be his age or chess ability.
