Does anyone who really enjoys chess considers 3 or 5 minute games actual chess. I enjoy chess, but I don't care for 3 or 5 minute games. I like to play a game a one sitting which could be 30 minutes to an hour. Its a little slower, but it feels more like a game because you have time to think and plan moves. I am also thinking about "Searching For Bobby Fischer" Josh's coach knows he is playing blitz in the park and warns him that playing that kind of game will spoil his real game and his tournament results. What are your thoughts.
it is chess. but different. it is like "instinct chess" - where you make the instinctually correct moves, and then at a few critical junctures stop and evaluate tactics.
that said, my tournament game is in the toilet :P
Players who are much better than I am can make better moves in 5 minute games than I make at tournament time controls (e.g., G/120). So if I sit here and say that a fast game isn't chess, I feel like I'm really just making an excuse, blaming my poor moves on the clock rather than my lack of chess ability.
If 5 minute games aren't chess, why are the better chess players winning more often?
