I'm wondering...in live chess tournies, what are some of the time regulations; eg, how much time do the players have to move.  I know there are a variety of time regulations; I"d like to know what one or two of them are. thanks

I assume you mean over-the-board tournaments, when you say live chess.

As you said, it depends. Some of the ones in my area (well ones I have went to or run) that are more common are Game/60, Game/90, and Game/120. That is the time allotted for each player so a G/60 could last up to 2 hours. You will also get shorter time controls, especially in scholastic events, such as Game/30 or Game/45.

Hi, tourneys on chess.com typically allow up to 3 days per move.  Some even allow vacation breaks.  I was on one tournament this summer that took a couple of months to finish the first round completely.  You play the live games on chess.com already, the one you and I played was a quick one allowing a maximum of 20 minutes per game and the tourneys are much the same except much more time is allotted for each move.  My recommendation is to sign up for a tournament and jump right in.  In the unlikely event you make a mistake you will be advised of the error and allowed to correct the next time you play.  Not a big deal and you'll have fun playing more games.

thank you.  I'm beginning to prefer the live chess here more than the ones that give you days to make a move.  best wishes
