I have an old book(reprinted 1928) called "My Best Games of Chess 1908-1923" by Alexander Alekhin published by G.Bell and Sons Ltd. London 1928. Some brilliant games including analysis of his games with my favourite Danish Gambit. It says "Alexander Alexandrovitch Alekhin he was born at Moscow on October 19th, 1892. When only sixteen he won the first prize in the Russian Amateur Chess Tournament held concurrently with the great St.Petersburg Tournament of 1909.Entering the Military School of St.Petersburg in 1909, his opportunities for tournament play were infrequent, but he succeeded in winning the first prize in three international events between 1909 and 1914.

Since the Revolution (The biographical note in the book continues) he has made Paris his permanent domicile and has recently obtained his Degree of Doctor en Droit at Paris.

His rapid rise to fame as a chess player since the war (that would be world war 1) is well known, and he is now probably one of the three greatest living chess masters.

Notes in brackets are mine. Is this the sort of info you are lookig for or more on games of masters?

If you want good books, send a message to Silman, he loves books as much as I do, he's just seen more than I have. There are a lot of good books from Dover publishing that have world champion bios and selected games.
